A Wrangell man is being charged with two felonies – extortion and coercion. He allegedly coerced and threatened someone with a knife.
Wrangell police arrested 24-year old Alejandro Calvillo on Sunday. A Ketchikan Superior Court Judge Katherine Lybrand arraigned him the same day through the Juneau Courthouse.
According to court documents, a victim told police that on Friday, Calvillo accused the victim of stealing property. Calvillo then threatened the person with a knife if they didn’t give him $1,000.
In a press release, police said that the victim paid the money to prevent an attack. The victim said this follows after Calvillo said he carries a knife and was arrested before for assaulting someone.
The following morning, police said they found that Calvillo possessed a large knife and Police Chief Gene Meek and Officer Garrett Gablehouse arrested him.
Police said that they verified that the victim paid the money to Calvillo. They said that Calvillo is also on felony probation for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in California – an additional charge of violating probation is currently pending.
Calvillo’s preliminary hearing will be at 3 p.m. on Tuesday (4/01) at the Wrangell Courthouse.
If the charges stay, he faces up to $100,000 in fines and 10 years in jail for threatening injury, and up to $50,000 in fines and five years in jail for coercion.
