Wrangell’s assembly will consider approving a Memorandum of Understanding to expand early education in Wrangell this evening.
The effort to improve childcare would be a partnership between the Wrangell Cooperative Association, the City and Borough of Wrangell and the Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. Their efforts would develop additional early childcare education services and expand the Head Start initiative in the borough. The goal is to add an additional Head Start classroom for up to 20 children ages 3-5. Additionally, they would create a daycare program that has up to two classrooms of eight children each, from birth to 3 years old.
In total, the collaboration would serve up to 36 children in Wrangell.
St. Michaels and McKinnon Street Rehabilitation projects
Assembly members will also consider amending an agreement with PND Engineers regarding the St. Michaels and McKinnon Street Rehabilitation projects.
The project includes replacing the roadway, sidewalk, utilities, water sewer and storm drain systems. The cost to survey St. Michaels Street would be $28,395.70 and is slated to start this year.
To save on costs, borough officials directed the company to survey McKinnon Street for next year’s rehabilitation project too. The borough administration advocates for renaming the project to “St. Michaels Street Rehabilitation and McKinnon Street Rehabilitation Design Projects.” They allocated a budget of $300,000.
Also, at tonight’s meeting, there will be a public hearing about changing the responsibility of 23 grinder pump stations to property owners. As it stands, the borough is maintaining 30 grinder pumps at a small deficit. This has been an ongoing issue over the last few decades, and the borough finds this could be a liability since the pumps, that usually service one to two homes, are on private properties.
