Wrangell’s assembly will discuss its capital project priorities list for fiscal year 2026 for state and federal funding.

Both objectives are to preserve and protect the health and safety of the community and provide improvements on existing facilities. They also intend to bolster economic development opportunities in Wrangell.

The top state legislative priorities are the wastewater treatment plant disinfection upgrades and the Inner Harbor Replacement project.

Other projects the borough is seeking state funding for are the Wrangell Timber Infrastructure and Deepwater Port Development project, along with the Public Safety Building.

The top priority for federal funding is dredging the Wrangell Harbor Basin.

Following that, the city will prioritize replacing the drinking water flume and work on the utility development of the Deepwater Port Subdivision.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the assembly will review a total of 15 projects on both lists and be able to change the priority order or revise the list.

In addition to covering the priorities list, the agenda shows that Wrangellites Greg and Anne Duncan will speak during the meeting’s “Persons to be Heard” portion.

They strongly oppose a proposal by a Washington state developer to open a waste gasification plant, also known as the Alaska BioEnergy Plant Project. Washington state developer, Dale Borgford, presented the idea at the Dec. 18 Economic Development Board Work Session. He wants to burn trash and organic material at the 6-mile mill property. In return, this would heat “large-scale greenhouses,” according to the Wrangell Sentinel.

Both Greg and Anne Duncan say they support promoting economic development, but not this plan. They say it would be a threat to people’s health, the environment and current businesses.

The regular borough assembly meeting will air on KSTK 101.7 FM and online at KSTK.org, starting at 6 p.m.

Anyone wishing to speak at the meeting can sign up on the “Persons to be Heard” sheet located at City Hall. View the full agenda packet here.
