Wrangell’s borough assembly will consider tonight approving a fee proposal to continue supporting the Dam Stabilization Project. It’s a critical component for the drinking water infrastructure.
This will extend a contract with Shannon & Wilson for an additional $114,450 to continue the final design services for the project.
The borough worked with the civil engineering firm to decide the approach for repairing and improving the dam’s stability. The project is now about a third finished. The state is paying for the work with a $5 million grant.
The assembly will also hold a public hearing on a new proposal to relax zoning rules along Zimovia Highway – between Wood Street and Bloom’s Trailer Court.
Currently, the area consists of lots zoned specifically for single homes. It also has open spaces that the borough owns. There’s two contract zone agreements interspersed along the area too, which allows for a transportation facility and storage unit business.
This proposal would reduce confusion of what zones exist in the area and instead, create a mix of residential and low-impact light industrial zoning. This would be under one zoning rule.
The borough said it would promote economic development while reducing impacts to neighbors.
The assembly will also consider formalizing a partnership with the Alaska Mental Health Trust Land Office to work on a potential timber harvest. Officials said it could lead to new housing and development of the Wrangell Deepwater Port by investing in the mill property.
Wrangell’s assembly meets at 6 p.m. tonight in the borough chambers in City Hall. The meeting will also be broadcast on KSTK: 101.7 FM and online at kstk.org.
