Fall in Southeast Alaska is off to a rainy start with two sizable storm systems predicted over the next week.
Meteorologist Greg Spann is with the National Weather Service in Juneau. He said to expect continued showers as the current system moves out of the area.
“Our next actual big system really arrives on Friday and into Saturday, and that system is going to give us another healthy dose of rain,” he said. “Then we have another potentially significant system that’s going to be towards next week.”
He said Wrangell could get upwards of three inches of precipitation in that time.
The second storm system is projected to happen next Wednesday or Thursday.
“There’s a big rain producer out there,” Spann said. “The question is, where exactly in the Southeast is that going to perhaps impact, or going to impact the hardest and the worst? So right now we are seeing a lot of indications that does exist. It’s just trying to pin down the details on it. Because, yeah this far out, that’s still almost a week in advance, and in the world of weather, a lot can change in a week.”
Spann said it’s important to keep up to date with the forecast. Statements to look out for from NOAA include flood watches, flood warnings or even special weather statements, which could indicate a higher chance of landslides.
NOAA’s weather forecast can be found at weather.gov/juneau, which is also available on KSTK’s website.
