Rules may soon change for grounds and markers at Wrangell’s cemeteries. When the Wrangell Borough Assembly meets tonight, it will consider a change to code that will allow decorations related to Memorial Day and Independence Day to remain intact throughout the holidays.
The new rules, if approved, would also limit temporary decorations, markers or monuments upon or near graves that extend above the ground’s surface, except on the day of burial and from Memorial Day to the Fourth of July; and on Veterans’ Day.
The assembly will also consider whether to put a question about assembly compensation out to voters this fall. If approved by voters, the ballot proposition would open the way for assembly members and the mayor to choose if they want payment for each meeting they attend. Assembly members believe compensation would encourage full participation during meetings and bring in more community members to run for available seats.
In other business, the assembly will honor the Wrangell Search and Rescue team with the Mel Nading Award for its response following last November’s landslide. The award recognizes those who went above and beyond during the catastrophe to save lives and reduce further harm.
The regular borough assembly meeting will be held Tuesday, August 27. Tune in for live coverage starting at 7pm on KSTK or listen to our livestream at kstk.org.
