The Wrangell School Board discussed a plan to repaint the elementary school. Much of the work will take place during the school year.
At last Monday’s board meeting, Facilities and Maintenance Director Kevin McCallister explained the need to paint the Wrangell Elementary School.
The overall cost would be around $300,000, but the borough would share half the cost. That would include everything from scraping the old paint, caulking and sealing the building and the dormers on the roof that admit more natural light to the interior.
But there’s one issue.
“We have some window seals on them on the backside of the primary building,” McCallister said. “They’re starting to deteriorate and I would like to see those windows seals replaced before we paint. Can’t really paint rotten wood.”
Though it’s still early on with planning, McCallister believes the work can be done this school year.
Superintendent Bill Burr agreed.
Burr said, “The goal is that they could get started this year and they could work around students.”
He said that he recommends the money comes from the Capital Improvement Fund, but the school board would have to approve that transaction first.
“It’s not cheap but we we do need the school painted,” Burr said.
Wrangell’s Capital Projects Director, Amber Al-Haddad, wrote in an email that the borough is in the process of executing a contract with a Washington-based company, Wrangell Painting. The company is currently working on Wrangell’s post office.
They plan to perform as much work as the weather will allow for the remainder of this year and complete the rest by the end of summer in 2025.
