A fire is burning in the Circle Bay area on Woronkofski Island. That’s about seven miles west of Wrangell on U.S. Forest Service land.
The Wrangell Fire Department and the Forest Service are working together to formulate a plan for extinguishing the fire. Currently, the wildfire is estimated to be less than one acre.
District Ranger Tory Houser said that it’s in a non-suppression area, meaning they’re not required to put out the fire.
She said, “Unless there’s no assets and things that we really need to protect, we want to monitor and allow natural processes to take place.”
She said they are aware of a power line that exists two and a half miles away and they’re making a plan to prevent the fire from reaching it.
It is unknown at this time how the fire started and is under investigation.
KSTK will provide further updates as they become available.
