Wrangell’s City and Borough Assembly on Tuesday night expects to approve a letter of support for legislation to improve Alaska’s waterfronts.

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski introduced a federal bill called the “Working Waterfronts Act” in February. It looks to enforce sustainable development along coastal areas and marine industries. This includes coastal energy, fisheries and seafood, shoreside infrastructure and workforce development.

In a letter to Murkowski, the city expressed particular interest in shoreside infrastructure and workforce development.

Additionally, a public hearing will take place in regards to the city moving to approve the sale of the Wrangell Medical Center. The six parcels adjacent to the old hospital are also deemed to be sold.

Wayne Johnson wants to purchase the properties. He said in a letter to the city that he plans to demolish the old hospital and develop housing units on all parcels. He said he believes it will be a good solution for the current housing crisis.

In new business, the Assembly will discuss transferring $175,000 from the residential construction fund balance. It will to the Alder Top Village Subdivision Property Development Account. These funds are needed to complete the construction work at Alder Top Village

So far the Borough has distributed $2.6 million for Alder Top Village. The money funded the development of Phase I and partial development of Phase II at Alder Top.

The Wrangell Borough Assembly will hold its regular meeting on March 12 at 6 p.m. in the Borough Assembly Chambers at Wrangell City Hall.
