The Wrangell High School girls’ basketball team came second in the state 2A tournament over the weekend.

The Lady Wolves lost the championship game Saturday evening to the second-seeded Tikigaq Harpoonerettes, 42-56. The Lady Wolves went into the state tournament seeded first.

The Harpoonerettes outscored the Wolves in every quarter except the third.

It’s the third 2A girls’ title for Point Hope’s Tikigaq Harpoonerettes in the last six seasons.

The other Southeast girls’ team in the state championship, the Metlakatla Miss Chiefs, came in fifth place overall in the girls’ 2A tournament.

The Metlakatla Chiefs were runners-up in the 2A boys’ tournament, losing to Ninilchik in Saturday’s championship game.

Wrangell’s high school boys’ team didn’t make it to state this year, after losing the runner-up game at the Region V tournament to the Petersburg Vikings. The Vikings went on to place sixth in the boys’ 2A state tournament.
