The Wrangell Public School Board announced Monday it is taking steps to respond to the concerns of teachers and parents regarding communication issues.
About six months ago, staff and community members told the board they do not feel like they have a safe way to communicate openly with board members.
The school board is starting a monthly “coffee with the school board” event. It is meant to be an informal gathering where school staff and members of the public can discuss school issues and updates with board members.
Coffee with the school board will be the second Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. at Evergreen Elementary School.
This was one idea that came out of a communication work session preceding October’s school board meeting.
Board President Susan Eagle said she is also working with the Association of Alaska School Boards to develop a communication survey. It will help the board identify specific concerns staff and Wrangell residents have about communication in the district.
The school board also voted to start a school-sanctioned spring track and field program with volunteer coaches at no cost to the district.
