Wrangell’s Fourth of July celebration was sunny for the first time in several years.
“The weather was a huge contributor to the success. It was just beautiful out, and all of the events were heavily attended, and it was a great turnout,” said Wrangell Chamber of Commerce Director Cyni Waddington.
Waddington said all of the day’s events ran smoothly.
“Kimberly Cooper was crowned as our 2015 Fourth of July Queen,” Waddington said. “She sold an incredible 51,920 tickets, which puts her second in the lead as far as record-breaking numbers.”
The AAU middle school girls’ basketball team sold 28,478 tickets. That brings the total to more than 80,000 queen tickets sold this year.
The cash prizes in the queen ticket raffle drawing all went to Wrangell locals. Doreen Purviance won the grand prize of $5000. Steven Stough won $3000, and Danny Churchill and Sandy Massin each won $1000.
Waddington also said this year’s logging show was the best she has ever seen.
“It was just packed and well organized, and there were more contestants this year than ever. It was really well done,” Waddington said.
John Rentschler took first place in the logging show for the second year in a row.
Parade float winners were Grand View Bed and Breakfast, the Jabusch family and Harbor Light Church. Annie Armstrong took “Best in Show.”
Local musician Kayla Hay won first place at Friday’s talent show.
